Hair Loss

Happy new year; here's your hairball...

I was enjoying a nice relaxing night out to myself while my wife watched the kids on Sunday evening. I thought I would the evening off with a nice relaxing hair cut and the hot towel treatment at Sports Clips while taking in some of the Jets game.

All thoughts of being able to relax went right out the window when the stylist asked me; "Do you have some scars on the back of your head or is this alopecia areata?"

Apparently, the latest development in my health nightmare is that the hair on my head is start to fall out in patches; I don't know all the details yet, but it sounds like this is related to my diabetes and thyroid issues. The doctor's office was closed Monday due to the holiday, but I'll be setting up an appointment to see the specialist today. If anyone is listening in, wish me luck.

Year End Summary

This wasn't the best year for exercise; I've had an on again off again relationship with the gym. I changed jobs back in January and didn't have the old gym buddies around to help keep the motivation up.

My A1Cs and blood sugars have been great so no complaints there.

I dropped my existing gym membership since I haven't been making it over there at all (the new employer has a gym so I've been using that instead), but I've also signed up with Farrell's Extreme Body Makeover. Farrell's is a 6 day a week class environment exercise program. I need some better structure to my gym regimen to keep me honest :) This starts up mid January.

I've been tossing around the idea of starting up my own non profit/charitable organization to help buy medical and health related supplies for diabetics in need. I have the benefit of good health insurance through my wife's employer, but not everyone is so fortunate. If anyone out there has any tips on how to get started drop me a line.

Steroids...

I came down with Bronchitis; so now I'm on antibiotics and Prednizone. I'm having to watch what I eat even closer than usual; those steroids do a real number on my blood sugar.

It's been awhile...

I used to be an absolute maniac about working out. I was going to the gym 5 or 6 days a week, often twice a day. Then gradually over the last year and 1/2 I tapered off until I just quit going altogether.

I’m still thin, but I’ve lost a ton of strength and muscle tone in the last year since I quit working out. Not sure how it happened, but I completely lost my motivation.

I finally went back to the gym Tuesday of this week, and I’ve worked out 5 days straight now counting day. I’ve been alternating days as cardio/lifting days.

Compliance

Ugh, I hate that word. It is a reminder that in some way I'm always a slave to my disease. When I finally seem to be in control and having good numbers a single missed dose of Metformin reminds me that I am not now, nor will I ever again be NORMAL.

I'll take 117 with a smile

My post prandial was 117 after IHOP. After a breakfast like that I certainly can't complain. It never ceases to amaze me how unpredictable my blood sugar can be at times.

IHOP

Just had breakfast at IHOP. This place is pretty much a diabetes free zone. I had steak and eggs with the harvest nut pancakes. Going to test in 2 hours to see just how bad this was...
